The new restrictions will not apply to goods from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Island of Man.
Although the FMD does not pose a risk for humans and there is no current cases in the United Kingdom, it is a very infectious disease that puts the British agricultural industry at significant risks.
British Minister of British agriculture David Zeichner said: “This government will do everything you need to protect British farmers from the feet and mouth. This is why we are further strengthening protections by introducing restrictions on imports of meat and dairy products to prevent the spread of the disease and protect British food security. ”
The president of the National Farmers’ Union, Tom Bradshaw, warned that “although the FMD source does not remain identified in certain parts of Europe, more strict border controls are essential.”
“The government must now ensure that passengers are aware of the new rules and that those who fight against imports of illegal meat, including border strength, have the resources they need to eliminate this practice,” he said.
Bradshaw called for an “intergovernmental biosecurity plan supported by investments” to impose restrictions on a permanent legislative basis.
