“Reset must be made up of the United States and Ukraine to go back on the same wavelength, President Zelenskyy giving him unequivocally to the initiative that President Trump takes to end the war and bring just and lasting peace to Ukraine,” said Mandelson. “And Europeans too, they must support calls for a ceasefire, and-by passing-I think that Ukraine should be the first to engage in a cease-fire and challenge the Russians to follow.”
But the Minister of the Armed Forces, Luke Pollard, moved away from Mandelson’s line on Monday. “It’s not a government policy,” he told Sky News. “We are still in discussions, diplomatic commitment, with our European, American and Ukrainian friends about the form of this agreement.”
Pressed by journalists Monday on the question of whether Mandelson had been independent with his remarks, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesman said: “I think the Prime Minister has clearly explained his priorities in the gathering of a small group of countries that are ready to defend the agreement in Ukraine and guarantee peace, and that work continues.”
The Row Back arrives as the United Kingdom is trying to position itself at the head of a “flight coalition” of countries ready to put peacekeeping troops in Ukraine after any cease-fire contract.
However, the United Kingdom continues to insist on American air coverage and air support is necessary for peace to be sustainable and that Russia is dissuaded from a new attack in Ukraine.
“ No agreement ‘on a truce of a month
Pollard would not be shot on the suggestion of French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday according to which Great Britain and France offer a partial truce of a month between Russia and Ukraine.
