The passengers of United Airlines spent 28 hours crossing the peaceful ocean while their flight made two unforeseen landings.
Flight 870, from Sydney to San Francisco, usually takes around 13 hours.
The Boeing 777 left Australia on Sunday around 11:30 a.m. local time later, according to data from Flightradar24.
If the passengers were irritated by the delayed takeoff, they had much more waiting.
Four hours and a half after the start of the trip, the plane turned south towards the island nation of the Samoa Pacific, by Flightradar24. He landed in the capital, Apia, two hours later.
The Paddle Travel Information Site, your own Kanoo, reported that this diversion was due to a medical emergency. United Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comments sent by Business Insider outside of American working hours.
The plane spent more than three hours on the Samoa ground before taking off, but it only traveled to Hawaii.
The six -hour flight to Honolulu also saw the passengers crossing the international date line. So, when he landed in the state capital around 7:30 am on Sunday, it was technically earlier than when the passengers left Australia.
However, they then had to wait another seven hours before they could leave for the last stage of their trip to San Francisco.
Flight 870 finally ended there around 10:30 p.m. PT, some 3 p.m. later as expected.
It seems that United Airlines deliberately chose to stop for the second time because the urgency meant that the crew would have exceeded their maximum working hours.
As the carrier generally does not fly for the Samoa, he could not have found a new driving team without disturbing other trips. On the other hand, United serves several cities of Honolulu.
This tactic to minimize disturbances is not uncommon.
Last month, a British Airways from the Bahamas in London also made two stops after a medical emergency.
He first turned to Gander International Airport from Canada, before stopping again in Iceland.
British Airways organized himself for the second stop because it was easier to send a replacement team there than to Canada.
