The two best sci-fi movies of 2024 were just added to Netflix

I don’t know who at Netflix is ​​responsible for allowing movies to appear on the service, but they are doing an incredible job this month with new sci-fi films in particular. Netflix previously just added Christopher Nolan classics Interstellar and Inception, but now they also got the two best sci-fi movies of 2024.

That would be Furiosa, the prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, and Dune Part 2, the sequel to Dune Part 1. You can debate which one is better, but both are absolutely excellent and they are both now available on Netflix, currently placed in the top 10. Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, is #3, while Dune Part 2, starring Timothy Chalamet and Zendaya, is… oops, I’m coming to check and although it was in the top 10 before, it just fell off, replaced by Despicable Me films.

This is a bit surprising given that the two have had opposite performances at the box office. Furiosa underperformed somewhat with $173 million on a big budget. It’s unclear whether George Miller will automatically get the green light for other Mad Max projects, which is a real shame.

Meanwhile, Dune Part 2 is one of the highest-grossing films of the year, grossing $714 million worldwide, far more than Part 1’s $407 million, and it allowed Denis Villeneuve to direct a third film. , which is already in preparation. He says he wants to be done with it after this, even though technically there are a lot more Dune books in the collection.

Both films were very well reviewed, a critical score of 90% for Furiosa with an audience score of 88%. Dune did even better with a critic score of 92% and an audience score of a staggering 95%. Still, it’s a shame Furiosa didn’t do better and maybe we won’t get another apocalyptic classic from George Miller. Someone force Elon Musk to watch the movies and maybe he’ll finance a new one himself. I don’t know, I desperately want more.

Chris Hemsworth is having a hell of a time in Netflix’s top 10 right now, not only in Furiosa at #3, but also in the #1 movie, In the Heart of the Sea, a not terribly good movie. 2015 film loosely based on Moby Dick. Hemsworth is already a Netflix star in the form of two different Extraction films, rare real-life hits from Netflix’s original film arm. Extraction 3 is indeed underway.

So, watch these movies. Both. I guess you might want to watch Fury Road and Dune Part 1 first, both of which are also on Netflix, but those are great too. You won’t regret it.
