Author Mike Curato wrote Flamethrower as a way to help young queer kids, as he once was, better understand and accept themselves. It garnered immediate praise and accolades – until it didn’t. When the book was caught in a wave of book bans in Texas, the narrative suddenly changed. And like so many books that tackle queer identity, Flamethrower quickly became a flashpoint in a long and messy culture war that attempted to distort the nature of the book.
