NEW YORK (AP) – The administration of President Donald Trump takes control of the $ 7 billion reconstruction project for the busy but aging Penn station in New York, away from the city’s public transport agency, said the head of transport on Thursday.
State and city officials asked for years to redo the country’s most frequented rail center, which is besieged by problems ranging from aging tracks to the darling channels.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Sean Duffy, said that his agency could deliver a world -class Penn station by working with Amtrak, the federal railway company which has the center of Midtown Manhattan. Duffy said that he withdrew the Metropolitan Transportation Authority as the head of the reconstruction project.
“New York deserves a Penn station which reflects American size and is safe and clean. The history of ineffectiveness, waste and mul management also meant that a new approach is necessary,” Duffy said in a prepared statement.
The administration did not immediately provide details on how the reconstruction would take place or how long it would take.
Governor Kathy Hochul described the move “a major victory for New Yorkers” which would save them tax money. Hochul said she had asked Trump federal funding.
“I would like to thank President and Secretary Duffy for ensuring the sole responsibility for delivering the beautiful new 7 billion dollars station that New Yorkers are worth,” said Hochul in a prepared statement.
The president and chief executive officer of the authority, Janno Lieber, said that he was happy that the federal government focuses on the project and that he expected the MTA to participate in the plans as a major tenant of the station.
Duffy recently faced the transport agency Crime in city metros and the $ 9 of congestion toll On the drivers entering the most nauseating parts of Manhattan. Federal authorities have set a Sunday deadline To end congestion tolls.
