At least seven people were killed in Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana, officials announced Thursday, after more than 30 tornadoes, combined with hail and heavy rains, swept the south and midwest, flooding the streets, slamming electric lines and flating houses and businesses.
The floods were to worsen while storms end in the region, putting millions of people under violent weather opinions in the coming days. Officials warned that a “generational flood” catastrophe was possible because more than one rain could fall, pushing rivers and swollen streams on their banks.
Midwest and southern cities and counties increased efforts to prepare the serious floods planned for the coming days. Officials said the schools of certain Tennessee and Kentucky districts are closed on Friday.
The body of army engineers said that it had filled around 1,500 sandbags to strengthen a dike near Poplar Bluff, Missouri, where the Black River had to reach almost record levels of flood during the weekend. An urban research and rescue team was also traveling to the region.
Governor Mike Braun of Indiana said he was activating the National Guard to help the storm response.
Up to 10 to 15 inches of rain could fall during the weekend, the National Weather Service said. The most intense rain was expected in Arkansas and Tennessee, where flood waters increased in some parts of Nashville and rescues were in progress.
