Arlington, Virginie (AP) – The tip of the wing of an American airline plane struck another airplane from the same airline on a taxi channel at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Thursday, authorities announced. No injury has been reported.
The tip of the wing of an aircraft heading for Charleston, in South Carolina, struck an airplane on New York shortly before 1 p.m., according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating.
The plane for New York did not move at the time, said the passenger and the United States Nick Lalota on X.
Lalota noted that the American representative Grace Meng was also on board the flight.
“Serving at the Congress came with experiences once in a life … Like right while the stationary on the DCA track, another plane has just come up against our wing,” said the Lalota post. “Go back to the door, but fortunately, everyone is fine!”
About 80 people were on the plane for Charleston and 71 for the flight to New York, according to American Airlines. The company said in a press release that the damage was limited to a winglet on each plane. He said the two planes would be put out of service for inspection and that replacement planes would take passengers to their destinations.
“Security is our absolute priority, and we apologize to our customers for their experience,” said the airline statement.
Greg Gilligan, a passenger on the flight for New York, said that he had been able to climb a new plane around 3:30 p.m., he said that the experience had amazed him.
“I saw the plane zipped by thinking it was going quickly, when he hit the wing of our plane,” said Gilligan in an SMS. “It was an incredible incredible experience.”
