A teenager whose mother would have kidnapped in Atlanta seven years ago was found alive in Colorado after a woman determined later to be her mother was seen in a house south of Denver, the authorities announced on Wednesday.
Douglas County Sheriff’s Sheriff’s deputies found Abdul Aziz Khan, 14, in a car outside the house, which was allegedly abducted by February 23 after the federal authorities spent five years in success in 11 states, said Kirk Taylor, the American marshal of Colorado.
The case, he told journalists on Wednesday: “had really turned out to be cold.”
Rabia Khalid, 40, and Elliot Bourgeois, 42, were arrested after the owner of the property saw them enter the house, which was vacant and listed for sale, via a security camera and reported an intruder, said sheriff Darren Weekly.
Khalid and Bourgeois told deputies who replied that they were associated with a real estate agent, but the authorities finally learned the identity of Khalid, said Weekly, and they discovered an arrest warrant in Louisiana for a charge of kidnapping.
Khalid has been accused of a shackle and several other crimes, journalists told the Judicial District George Brauchler. Bourgeois was also accused of a dozen criminal crimes, notably kidnapping, said Brauchler. Both are held on a deposit of a million dollars.
The nature of their relationship is not clear, said weekly.
The Public Defender Office representing Khalid did not immediately respond to a request for comments. He was not immediately clear if the same office.
Abdul was kidnapped after a childcare dispute that included criminal allegations against his father, Weekly told journalists.
These allegations were rejected and Abdul was removed when he appeared that his father was in police custody, Weekly said.
Weekly said he was not clear if Abdul knows that he had been kidnapped. When the deputies approached him, said Weekly, he immediately called Khalid and Bourgeois and seemed to have been trained on what to say to the police.
Abdul and a second child in the vehicle whose identity were not disclosed both healthy, said Weekly. The two were placed in police custody, he said.
Weekly described Abdul’s reunification with his family as a “transition” and said the process was underway.
In a statement published by the Sheriff’s Office, the family said they had been exceeded that Abdul was found and grateful for all the support they had received in the past seven years.
