On Friday, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to temporarily suspend $ 65 million in teacher training grants which, according to the government, would promote diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, a first victory for the administration before the judges.
The court order was not signed, which is typical when judges act on emergency requests.
The decision was 5 to 4, with five of the Court’s conservatives – judges Amy CONEY BARRETT, Neil M. Gorsuch, Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. ALITO JR. and BRETT M. Kavanaugh – Most of the most part. Chief judge John G. Roberts Jr. voted with the three liberal judges of the dissenting court.
The prescription came in response to one of a series of emergency requests from the Trump administration asking judges to intervene and cancel the lower case law decisions which temporarily blocked parts of President Trump’s agenda.
The subsidies in question in the case helped to place teachers in poor and rural areas and aimed to recruit a diversified workforce reflecting the communities it served.
In February, the Department of Education sent subsidy recipients to letters from driver form ending funding, claiming that programs “fail to serve the best interests of the United States” taking into account factors other than “merit, equity and excellence” and authorizing waste and fraud.
Eight states, including California and New York, continued to stop the cuts, arguing that they would undermine urban and rural school districts, forcing them to hire “long -term substitutes, teachers with emergency references and teachers without license on derogations”.
