The supreme chief of Iran, the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, criticized the American proposal for a new nuclear agreement, insisting that he will not stop enriching uranium.
Iranian negotiators are expected to respond in the coming days to the plan presented during the talks last Saturday. He would see what Iran interrupt the production of enriched uranium – which can be used to make fuel from the reactor but also nuclear weapons – and rather rely on a regional consortium for supplies.
In a speech on the anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei said that it was “100% against the idea of” We Can “- a famous slogan of the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Later, the American president said that Iran “worked slowly” his decision on an agreement.
Donald Trump wrote in an article on Social Truth that he had discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin Iran and “the fact that the time takes place on Iran’s decision concerning nuclear weapons, which must be done quickly”.
“We will need a final answer in a very short time!”
Trump warned the leaders of Iran that he could face with us and an Israeli military action if the negotiations do not succeed, and he would have given them a deadline of two months in a letter which he sent in early March.
He also insisted that Iran should stop all in uranium by virtue of any agreement.
As a supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei has the last word on Iran’s most important issues, including a potential nuclear agreement.
“The enrichment of uranium is the key to our nuclear program and enemies focused on enrichment,” he said in his speech on Wednesday.
“The coarse and arrogant leaders of America require several times that we should not have a nuclear program. Who are you to decide if Iran should have an enrichment?”
The chief negotiator of Iran, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, wrote on X: “Iran has paid dear for these capacities, and there is no scenario in which we will abandon the patriots who realized our dream.”
“To reiterate: no enrichment, no contract. No nuclear weapons, we have an agreement.”
Under a 2015 agreement with six world powers, Iran has agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions. This included uranium more than 3.67% purity, which can be used to produce fuel for commercial nuclear power plants, not enriching uranium.
Trump abandoned the agreement during his first mandate in 2018, saying that he had done too little to stop a path to a bomb and restored the paralyzing economic sanctions to force Iran to renegotiate.
Iran insists that its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful and that it will never seek to develop or acquire nuclear weapons. However, he has increasingly violated the restrictions of the existing nuclear agreement in retaliation for sanctions.
A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said last week that it had now stored more than 408 kg (900 lb) of uranium enriched at 60% purity, near the quality of weapons, which would be sufficient to make nine nuclear bombs.
Trump said on Monday that his administration “would not allow any enrichment of uranium” by Iran.
He came in response to American media relationships that the proposal presented to Omani mediators by his special Steve Witkoff envoy would allow Iran to continue the production of low-enrichment uranium until a regional consortium has built installations to enrich uranium for fuel for civil reactors under the supervision of IAEA and the United States.
Once the installations are operational, Iran should stop enrichment in the country.
According to AxiosIran would not be authorized either to build new enrichment facilities, should dismantle infrastructure for the conversion and treatment of uranium, and should stop new research and development on centrifugals used to enrich uranium. The sanctions of the sanctions are granted once Iran “demonstrates a real commitment”.
The White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to comment on the reports, but said that it was in the “best interest to accept it” from Iran.
Araghchi said on Sunday that his Omani counterpart had presented “the elements of an American proposal, which will rightly be reacted in accordance with the principles, national interests and the rights of the people of Iran”.
Last week, two Iranian officials told the news agency in Reuters that Iran could interrupt enrichment if the United States had released frozen Iranian funds and recognized its right to enrich uranium for civil use under a “political agreement” which could lead to a broader nuclear agreement.
