Journalism students from Southwestern College won the Golden Crown – the highest price – from the Columbia University Scholastic Press Association to be the best college newspaper in North America.
The Southwestern College Sun was chosen in hundreds of student newspapers in four -year universities and two -year colleges across the country and Canada according to reports, writing, publishing, design and production. The prize, which recognizes “global excellence”, was recently announced at Columbia University in New York.
“It is a rare triumph for a community college to win the prestigious prize that is generally going to university elite journalism programs,” said Max Branscomb, a longtime journalism professor at the Southwestern College and faculty advisor.
The sun has a reward file, but this is the first time that you have received the Golden Crown. The Sun was appointed 2024-25 national champion by the National Newspaper Association as well as by the Society of Professional Journalists and California Newspaper Publishers Association.
“Our staff comes from many cultures and talks about many languages. This gives us the power to speak to people around the world who have settled here, “said Alexa Lima, editor -in -chief of the Sun.
The El Sol magazine in Southwestern won the Golden Crown in 2023. The Sun website won in 2012.
The Sun and El Sol magazine won a certain number of national prices in 2024, including the associate college cardiac stimulator, considered the pulitzer price of student newspapers. The two publications also won the Pinnacle prize from the College Media Association. El Sol was selected as National College Magazine of the Year by the American Educators of Journalism and Mass Communication, American Scholastic Press Association, Society of Professional Journalists and California College Media Association.
