Pittsburgh (AP) – When things became difficult for Derrick Harmon during his university career in the state of Michigan and Oregon, the defensive tackle would bring together the strength of his mother, Tiffany healthy.
“At the back of my head, since the start of my university career, I (thought) how can I (not) continue if I’m tired? I’m injured? Anyway,” said Harmon. “Why (I can’t), I continue if it can get up and continue to continue brain surgery. It is our resilience and our hard work, really. ”
Healthy has endured numerous brain surgeries and a stroke in recent years when his son has passed from the probable choice of the first round of the NFL. And shortly after the Pittsburgh steelers Charmmon selected 21st in the general classification Late Thursday evening, he went to visit his mother to say goodbye.
Healthy died a few hours after his son realizing a dream they had worked so hard to realize.
Harmon said a few minutes after receiving a phone call from the steelers head coach Mike Tomlin that his mother was in life assistance but had no details.
“After leaving the phone with you, I head to the hospital to tell him that his son was drafted,” said Harmon.
The president of the Steelers, Art Rooney II, extended the condolences of the team to their new star.
“Although we are delighted to select Derrick during the first round of the NFL draft, our hearts are heavy while we mourn the death of his mother, Tiffany healthy,” Rooney said in a statement. “We will support Derrick and his family as we can then sail in this period of sorrow. In moments like this, we hope that Derrick will find comfort in love and support of the organization and fans of the Steelers around the world.”
Harmon, 21, called the moment when he became a professional soft-maker. He had a party project and members of his immediate and widened family were by his side when the moment finally arrived. However, her mind could not help driving towards the person who may not be there physically, well aware that, in some respects, she will be with him forever.
“After all these brain surgeries, man, she did not give up,” said Harmon. “She has always been training, has always been working.”
And now Harmon will face the difficult task of trying to do the same, although he does not do it alone.
“I am very lucky to have (one) village around me,” he said.
