The temple of renown Shaquille O’Neal agreed to become the director general of the male basketball program of the state of Sacramento under the new coach Mike Bibby.
A person familiar with the situation said on Monday that O’Neal would take the voluntary work of the program that his son, Shaqir, recently joined as a player. The person spoke under the cover of anonymity because the school had not announced.
ESPN first announced the news.
Bibby, the former NBA star for Sacramento Kings, was hired as head coach for Hornets last month while school tries to enhance his profile in college athletics.
One of the first additions that Bibby made was to sign Shaqir O’Neal as a transfer from Florida A&M. Now Bibby has the father of O’Neal involved in the program.
O’Neal is the last high -level athlete to assume a role of managing director in a university program. Stephen Curry has recently been announced as Davidson and Trae Young Deputy Managing Director has the same role in Oklahoma.
O’Neal won four NBA titles, three MVPs from the NBA final and a League MVP during his 19 -year career in the NBA. He is currently an analyst of TNT’s “Inside The NBA”. He was also a minority owner of the Sacramento Kings of 2013-222.
The state of Sacramento went 7-25 this season under the acting coach Michael Czepil, who was promoted last spring after David Patrick left to take a job as a chief trainer associated with the LSU.
The Hornets had gone from 28-42 in two seasons under Patrick and the program has never made a NCAA tournament since its visit to division I in 1991-92. The Hornets only had a victories record twice, going 16-14 in 2019-20 and 21-12 in 2014-15.
