Only a few days after the Vice-President JD Vance’s March visit to the base of the Pituffik space in Greenland, the installation commander sent an email to the basis of Vance’s criticism with regard to Denmark and its supervision of the territory, Military.com learned.
Colonel Susan Meyers, the commander of the 821st Space Base Group who also oversees the northern military base in the Pentagon, sent a message from March 31 to all Pituffik staff aimed at generating the unit among aviators and tutors, as well as the Canadians, the Danes and the Greenlands who work there, after the appearance of Vance. She wrote that she “spent the weekend thinking about Friday’s visit – the actions taken, the words pronounced and how it must have affected each of you.”
“I do not presume understand the current policy, but what I know is that the concerns of the American administration discussed by the vice-president Vance do not reflect the basis of the Pituffik space,” wrote Meyers in the email, which was communicated to Military.com.

The remarks sent by email, confirmed as accurate in Military.com by The Space Force, mark a rare decline in the ranks of criticism and repeated criticisms of the Trump administration of NATO members and longtime allies. A familiar source with the email said that it had been sent to all the basic staff, including those of Denmark and Greenland on the installation.
Meyers became the commander of the 821st Space Base Group in Pituffik in July, according to an article on Facebook on the ceremony for change of command.
“I commit that, as long as I have the chance to direct this base, all our flags will proudly fly – together,” said Meyers’ electronic message at the base.
Vance went to Greenland and spoke to the space base on March 28.
President Donald Trump and Vance have spoke several times about their desire for the United States to take control of Greenland, which is a territory of his colleague member of NATO Denmark. Trump and Vance also said that they support the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination, although the survey has suggested a large majority of residents there do not want to be part of the United States
Trump said, in reference to the American control of the Danish territory, that it is “a good possibility that we can do it without military force” but added “I do not remove anything from the table”.
Vance, during his visit to Pituffik, criticized Denmark, saying that the incursions by China and Russia had put the territory in danger.
“Our message to Denmark is very simple,” said Vance during his visit to the space base. “You have not done a good job by the inhabitants of Greenland. You have sub-infringement of the inhabitants of Greenland, and you have the safety of this incredible and beautiful land mass.”
An opinion poll in January from Verian revealed that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to leave Denmark to join the United States, a New Yahoo survey, last month, showed that 49% of Americans have opposed the idea of annexing Greenland, with only 19% in favor and the remaining 32% indebted.
Taylor Van Kirk, Vice-President’s press secretary, told Military.com that Vance was “grateful to visit the Pituffik space base and for the opportunity to meet our courageous soldiers and women” and reiterated the support of Trump’s vision for Greenland.
“President Trump made his vision of an increased security imprint in the Arctic, in evidence, and the vice-president is committed to implementing the president’s agenda,” Van Kirk said in a statement sent by email to Military.com. “This includes strengthening partnership and cooperation between the United States and Greenland, which is essential both for American national security and the security of our partners around the world.”
The American army has long been present in Greenland. Back in the mid-1940s, a Danish-American radio station was installed near what is now a Pitoffick space base, according to an information sheet of the 821st Space Base Group.
In 1951, a defense agreement between Denmark and the United States led to the creation of the Thule defense area. Thule Air Base was renamed in 2023 at Pituffik Space Base – to show its new affiliation of the service branch, as well as to reflect the traditional name of Greenland for the old colony where the base was built, military.com reported.
This previous defense agreement was raised by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lars Løkke Rasmussen in a shared video on social networks after the appearance of Vance in Pituffik. Rasmussen said he respected Vance’s call for greater American military presence in Greenland but did not appreciate rhetoric.
“Many accusations and many allegations have been made and, of course, we are open to criticism, but allow me to be completely honest: we do not like the tone in which it is delivered,” he said in the video. “This is not how you talk to your nearby allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States as close allies.”
Spatial force did not answer questions from Militar.com sent Wednesday morning by asking for an additional context for Meyers’ email. He was not immediately clear if Meyers was still commander of the 821st Space Base Group after his email.
The chief of staff of the Ministry of Defense, Joe Kasper, told Military.com in a declaration sent by email that “civil control of the military is a principle of foundation of our armed forces. Actions to undermine the chain of command or to overthrow the order of President Trump will not be tolerated at the Ministry of Defense.”
The Trump administration has undergone general purge of high -ranking military officers and commanders.
Last week, Trump dismissed General Tim Haugh, General Tim Haugh, director of the National Security Agency who also supervised the Cyber Commandment.
The vice-admiral Shoshana Chatfield, who served with NATO, was dismissed this week in what seemed to be part of this purge. The officials of the office of the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, did not immediately confirm this decision or proposed a declaration on the reasons why Chatfield was relieved or by whom.
Other high -level military leaders who have been dismissed since Trump took office – without any given public reason – including the spouse of the chiefs, General Charles “CQ” Brown, the senior Navy Manager Lisa Franchetti and the Chief of the Air Force Staff, James Slife.
