(Tnnd) – Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction – six weeks more winter. The famous marmot saw its shadow on Sunday morning, its managers announced a large crowd gathered for the occasion at the Gobbler button in Pennsylvania.
Each year, February 2 – Groundhog Day – The members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club are traveling to the Gobbler button, which is the official house of the Marmotte.
The tradition of the marmot is an annual ritual which dates back more than a century in Western Pennsylvania with deep roots in European folklore. When Phil the marmot does not see his shadow, Legend says that early spring is imminent. When he sees it, there will be six weeks more winter.
Historically, Phil predicted a longer winter more often than early spring, reports the Associated Press. The National Centers for Environmental Informational have carried out a test to determine how precise Phil was. They found that in average, Phil’s prediction was correct of 30% of the time in the past 10 years.
Meteorologists Accuweather will publish spring forecasts on Wednesday, and forecasts so far do not “seem as simple as Phil”.
“We already see spring establishing itself in the south,” said the long -range expert in Accuweather, Paul Pastelok.
Whether Phil’s prediction this year is true or not, winter winners will have to wait and see if the shadow of the groundhog is a real sign of the season or simply a fun tradition for everyone to guess.
