Around a million people flee fighting in Rafah (UNRWA)

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said about a million people had fled the southern Gaza town of Rafah since Israel intensified its offensive there over of the last three weeks.

“This happened with no safe place to go and amid bombings, lack of food and water, piles of trash and unsuitable living conditions,” the agency wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Day after day, providing assistance and protection becomes almost impossible,” the text adds.

Israel continued its offensive despite a legally binding order from the International Court of Justice to “immediately end its military offensive in Rafah.”

The court described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “disastrous” and “catastrophic.”

Spain, Ireland and Norway to recognize Palestinian state

Spain, Ireland and Norway are expected to officially recognize Palestinian statehood on Tuesday.

They will thus join more than 140 UN member states.

Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland and Romania recognized a Palestinian state before joining the EU, while Sweden proposed recognition in 2014.

Slovenia said it would decide on Thursday whether to recognize the Palestinian state.

On Monday, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz accused Spain of “rewarding terrorism” by recognizing a Palestinian state.

Guterres, UN rights chief condemn Israeli strike

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned a deadly Israeli airstrike that killed dozens of people in Rafah, southern Gaza.

Sunday’s strike drew international condemnation. Israel said the incident was under investigation.

“I condemn Israel’s actions that have killed dozens of innocent civilians who were only seeking refuge from this deadly conflict,” Guterres said in a message on the X platform, formerly Twitter.

“There is no safe place in Gaza. The horror must end.”

Volker Türk, the UN human rights chief, also condemned the strike.

“The images from the camp are horrific and show no apparent change in the methods and means of warfare used by Israel, which have already led to so many civilian deaths,” Türk said.

He called on Israel to stop its military offensive in Rafah and comply with the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

UN Security Council to meet after Rafah attack

The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold an emergency closed-door meeting following a deadly Israeli airstrike that hit the southern Gaza Strip, diplomats say.

The meeting was requested by Algeria, the Arab representative on the council, and supported by Slovenia.

The Hamas-run enclave’s health ministry said 45 people were killed and dozens more injured in the airstrike that hit tents housing displaced people.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the strike a “tragic mistake” and said the incident was under investigation.
