Mexico City – Personal secretary and an advisor to the mayor of Mexico City were killed on Tuesday, the authorities announced, during the worst attack on the capital officials in recent years.
Mayor Clara Brugada – who holds the second most powerful political position in the country to the president Claudia Sheinbaum – said in a statement that her secretary Ximena Guzmán and her advisor José Muñoz had been killed in the modern district. The reason was the subject of an investigation.
Later, in a brief statement to the press, a visibly upset Brugada said that she had worked with the two for years. She has sworn that her administration “will continue her relentless fight against insecurity”.
The attack occurred around 7 a.m. when Muñoz and Guzmán were in an Audi on an animated track in Mexico City. There were four bullet holes grouped on the driver’s side of the windshield. A body is lying on the sidewalk.
Mexico security analyst David Saucedo said the murders had the characteristics of an organized crime and that he thought they were intended to put pressure on the administration of Brugada. He asked why someone as important as Guzmán de Brugada had no security details.
Sheinbaum condemned the killings and said that there would be no impunity. She said that she was not aware of any threat to Guzmán. Sheinbaum was mayor of Mexico City before winning the presidency last year. She and Brugada are allies in the Morena party.
The homicides increased slightly in the capital of Mexico in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
