A man died after collapsing during a half-marathon in southern California one day when temperatures reached triple figures.
Spencer Cabral, 38, of Camallo, was one of the four participants of Boney Mountain Trail Run on Saturday who needed medical care, said the fire service of the county of Ventura. He was transported by plane to a hospital in Thousand Oaks, where he died, said the lawyer of the county. A cause of death has not been released.
A heat notice had been published on Saturday May 10 by the National Weather Service for a large band of South California, including the race region. That day, temperatures reached 100 in the Moorpark nearby and were in the 90s for a large part of the south of the county of Ventura.
The Boney Mountain race offered courses of 4.4 and 13.1 miles on trails in the hills above the Conejo valley. The half-marathon started at 8 a.m. Around 11 a.m., emergency teams were called to people who have undergone heat -related problems.
The fire service has not disclosed the details of Cabral’s case. It was not listed on the race results page, which showed 117 finish at the half-marathon and 21 which did not finish the race.
A publication on Facebook of a person who identified himself as Cabral’s wife said that he had collapsed on the course, unless the finish line. He was the father of four, she said.
The Boney Mountain Trail Run, supervised by the race organizer Socaltrail, was initially scheduled for February but was transferred in May due to bad path conditions caused by the rain.
