Playing Torn and Myst at the time was an unprecedented experience and is something that will probably never be repeated. As a verified senior who was there and even read the novels, it’s impossible to underestimate the buzz and excitement that these obtuse and confusing puzzle games caused. Riven, like its predecessor Myst, makes a point of diving you into the deep end. The puzzle game simply throws you into a moment of exposition, and then off you go. You have little guidance, no real idea of how to achieve your goals, just a lot of strange machines and a few different locations to explore. However, by playing you will understand what you are doing and how you are going to do it. What sets Riven and Myst apart from other games is the feeling that your mind is expanding as you play it. Everything is interconnected, puzzles can take days to solve, you’ll learn invented languages, explore math concepts and much more. Slowly – oh, so slowly – you will progress and when you do, you will feel like the smartest person in the room. Even if you’re alone in this room.
Riven’s remake follows several remastered versions of Myst, and like this, previous game developer Cyan Worlds hasn’t just given the game a lick of paint and sent it out the door. Instead, here we have a complete reimagining of Riven, with new cutscenes, new characters, revamped puzzles, and an overhaul that touches every aspect of the game. Even though it’s called a remake, it feels a lot more to the full realization of the game’s original dream. This means that even if you’ve played Riven every day since launch, you’ll still have plenty of surprises in store.
Now available, the Riven remake is already attracting an audience that seems to love what it does. Currently sitting at a 95% rating on Steam, it’s hitting all the right marks for players who have already picked it up. A quick look at the reviews and it seems like most are existing Riven players dipping their toes in remade waters, with the majority extremely happy with the quality and scope of this release. Hopefully the success of this Riven remake will see the other games in the Myst series brought back to life, but if Pyst could stay in the history books I’d be more than happy.
