Political parties in Belgium concluded an agreement on Friday to form a large coalition government.
The announcement concluded months of talks that followed the federal elections in June of last year.
The new Prime Minister of the country should be the head of the new Flemish Alliance (N-VA) Bart de Wever, who won the victory in the June polls.
De Wever will direct a coalition with five parties which includes Christian Democrats, the liberal reformist movement and the Flemish social democrats.
Together, they hold a majority of 81 places in the Belgian Parliament with 150 places.
The Vlaams Belang (Flemish interest) party was excluded from government talks, although the anti-immigration party has produced the most important gains in the June 2024 elections.
Political parties regularly exclude Vlaams Belang because of its anti-immigrant and anti-EU position as well as its objective of dividing the country.
The Royal Palace of Belgium published a declaration saying that De Wever had reported the agreement of the future coalition to the king.
“His mandate has been extended until the appointment of the new government. The date of the escure will be announced later,” said the palace in an article on social networks.
It will be the first time that Belgium will have had a nationalist in the position of Prime Minister. The mayor of Antwerp since 2013, of Wever had put pressure for reductions in benefits, reforms of the retirement system and immigration borders.
“The die is launched,” said Wever on social networks, adding a photo of him meeting the king at the palace.
