The Jarren Duran path to the start of the striker for the Boston Red Sox, being appointed MVP of the All-Star 2024 game and jumping its gain potential by signing a one-year contract of $ 3.75 million with a club option for $ 8 million in 2026 was anything but linear.
The former Voltner of Cal State Long Beach and Cypress High is open to his mental health difficulties which included a verbal explosion to a fan, carrying a t -shirt with a profane message and – the most concerning Duran and his relatives – depression and attempted suicide in 2022.
Interviewed for Netflix documentation in eight games “The clubhouse: a year with the Red Sox” which will be presented on Tuesday, Duran said that he was so hard with himself that he did not want to live.
“I already heard fans,” said Duran in the docuseries. “And what they said to me: (it was like):” I said to myself 10 times worse in the mirror. “It was a really difficult time for me.
The 28 -year -old described the moment when he almost killed himself in frightening terms.
“I got to a point where I was sitting in my room, I had my rifle and I had a ball and I pressed the relaxation and the pistol clicked, but nothing happened,” he said. “So, to this day, I think God simply did not let me commit suicide because I don’t know why it did not go. I took it as a sign, I may have to be here for a reason, it was then that I started to look at myself in the mirror after the weapon was not a party.
“I said to myself,” Do I want to be here, or I don’t want to be here? ” This has happened for a reason and you are obviously here for a reason, so let’s be how you want to be and play (the way) that you want to play and live as you want to live. “”
Duran had a season in small groups in 2024, leading the American league in double (48), triplets (14), plates (735) and Battes (671). He struck .285 with 191 strokes, 111 points scored, 21 circuits and 34 stolen bases.
His ascent began in 2023 when he struck. 295 with 24 stolen bases in 102 games after being recalled from Triple A, and coincided with his new resolution.
“Jarren’s decision to share his story is an act of courage that reaches far beyond baseball,” said the president and chief executive officer of the Red Sox, Sam Kennedy. “By opening, he shows others who may have trouble not being alone and what to ask for help is not just ok, it’s essential.
“Each member of this organization continues to stand with him. He has our deepest admiration, he has always had our total support and we are incredibly lucky to have him in the context of our team. ”

Duran was a choice of seventh round of the Red Sox of Cal State Long Beach in 2018. At the university and at the start of his professional career, he showed good speed and athletics but little power. This changed in 2021 when he hit 16 circuits in 60 triple-A games and was promoted to the Red Sox.
However, he had trouble, hitting .215 with two circuits in 33 games. The following season was a rehearsal, with good triple figures followed the 0.221 striker with three circuits in 58 games.
In August 2022, he mentally spiral, saying to Masslive: “I can’t talk too much, but I was pretty low this year. It was difficult to stay (in the big leagues). I don’t really talk to my family about my low points because I am so closed to everyone.
“I tear myself internally and that I become quite depressed and things like that. I find it hard to reach out to people because I don’t want to disturb others with my problems. I build it in myself, which obviously aggravates everything. ”
Major League Baseball offers players mental health resources that have helped Duran, and the Red Sox has long provided players from the major and minor in full health services.
“The Red Sox have offered … mental health screening, crisis response protocols, educational programming and access to internal care and specialists outside,” the Red Sox said in a press release. “The support extends over the seven affiliates of the minor league and involves collaboration between medical, performance and coaches to ensure that care is available at all levels.”
Last August, barely a month deleted by the name of MVP of the star match after hitting a two -round house in the victory of the American League, Duran was suspended two games for having shouted a homophobic insult in a fan who had heckled him.
Duran expressed remorse with journalists thereafter, although he did it while wearing a t-shirt that said “F— ‘Em”, wondering how serious he was of contrition. The t-shirt was initiated by Duran and also carried by teammates to support his efforts in the treatment of his mental health problems.
In docusery, Duran said that avoiding depression requires constant effort. He holds a daily newspaper and employs written reminders that press him to win the battle.
“On (the strip on) my left wrist, I write:” F-“Em” because it was I who said to my demons: “You are not going to unfold me” “, he said.” And on my right wrist, I write “always alive” because I am still there and that I always fight. “
