The Red Sox recognized a missed opportunity after their loss to the Guardians
Morning Sports Update
“It was definitely a low-IQ baseball game.”
Red Sox respond to mistakes: The Red Sox came out on the losing end of a 10-7, 11-inning thriller against the Guardians on Tuesday night.
Boston rallied from a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning, but couldn’t hold on as closer Kenley Jansen blew his first save of the season in ninth.
“At the end of the day, I have to take this one and be responsible for it,” Jansen told reporters afterward, according to Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe.
It was a night of ups and downs for several Red Sox players. Rafael Devers gave Boston the lead with his two-run double in the sixth-inning rally, but then left the game with left knee discomfort.
Wilyer Abreu recorded the Red Sox’s 20th error of the season as part of Cleveland’s three-run fifth inning, but ultimately made (yet another) incredible catch in right field to help preserve a 6-6 tie in the ninth.
And Triston Casas, who he later hit a third home run in four gamesalso ran into a groundout on the basepaths in the second inning.
Cleveland pitcher Tanner Bibee struck out Casas as he left second base a little too soon after his initial double.
After the loss, Casas, like Jansen, took responsibility for it. He explained that he was trying to reach third to help Abreu at bat.
“I thought if I could put him in a situation where he just had to put the ball in play, that would be his best chance to get an RBI and get me in,” Casas told MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “But overall, based on the situation and where we were in the game, it was very poor judgment and it was definitely a low IQ baseball play.”
“It shouldn’t have happened,” Casas said of the mental error. “It is unacceptable that this happened this way. It’s definitely a learning experience. It can’t happen again, just not the right play based on where we were in the game.
Anecdote: Since 2000, three different Red Sox players have had the unfortunate distinction of leading the American League in errors. Can you name them?
(Answer at bottom).
Hint: one did it in 2002, the second in 2005 and the third has done it three times since 2018.
