After countless rumors, the Red Sox finally decided to have fun on the deadline for trade on Wednesday evening, with a veteran launcher Steven Matz acquired from the cardinals. The agreement was reported for the first time by Jeff Passan d’Espn.
Lefty, 34 years old, Matz arrives in Boston in the middle of a season which presented a file of 5-2, 3.44 MPM and 47 sticks in the stick in 55 rounds on 32 appearances for the cardinals. Matz also displayed a better career whip of 1.18 during his 2025 32-appearance season with Saint-Louis.
Used as a starter for the majority of his career, Matz has been deployed out of the enclosure of the lifts in recent months.
Matz has a four -side repertoire titled by his lead (thrown almost 60% of the time), with strong support behind his curve, a change and a cursor. Behind the lead, Matz has a notable curve ball which can be downright devastating (especially against left -handers), and was very successful with this field this season.
Regarding the way in which the Red Sox plan to use Matz, it goes without saying that its recent use means that it will be an option of enclosure of the statements for Boston.
But it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox explore the idea of stretching it (or using it at the very least as the first match), especially with Boston in search of a little more pop of their rotation.

Matz, who spent the first six years of his career with the dishes before playing for Toronto in 2021, is in the last year of a $ 44 million contract over four years signed with St. Louis. It is also a bit of a complete moment of circle, because Matz had aroused Boston’s interest before finally signing with the cardinals.
To bring Matz to Boston, the Red Sox sent the corner player Blaze Jordan to the Cardinal organization. Jordan was classified as the 17th best hope of the Red Sox agricultural system, according to the mlb.com ranking.

The 23-year-old Jordan had experienced a year in small groups in the ranks of the minor Boston leagues in 2025, with an average of. 308 and 0.872 Ops, as well as 12 circuits and 62 products produced, in 88 games between Portland Double-A and Triple-A Worcester.
This trade brings together Jordan with the former chief baseball director and current cardinal advisor Chaim BloomWho had taken Jordan with a choice of third round during his first year of work in Boston in 2020. Bloom, when he was currently in this role of aforementioned advisor with St. Louis, should take over for John Mozeliak as a new president of the baseball operations club in 2026.
