A lack of winter blockbusters has taken a bite from the quarterly benefits of the AMC theaters.
The losses to the largest cinema operator in the world have expanded to $ 202.1 million while the box office began to start in 2025, a period that welcomed flops like “Mickey 17”, “Snow White” and “The Alto Knights”. It was a darker financial image than that painted during the quarter of the previous year when AMC losses reached $ 163.5 million. Revenues for the period of three months ending in March dropped from $ 9% to $ 862.5 million, compared to $ 951.4 million during the same three -month period in 2024. Action losses were made at 58 cents, compared to 78 cents in the quarter of the previous year.
These were in accordance with the projections of Wall Street. Analysts expected the exposure giant to have a loss of the first quarter of 59 cents per share on income of $ 837 million, according to FactstSet. AMC shares were modestly down to discussions after opening hours, trading at just under $ 2.70 per share.
The president of the AMC, Adam Aron, sounded a defensive note in a declaration accompanying the results. “Whoever tries to draw conclusions on the success or attraction of cinemas from the results of the first quarter of 2025 is likely to be mistaken, because the national box-office on the scale of the Q1 industry was in our opinion, a distorting anomaly which has already been corrected.
Indeed, sales of tickets in the second quarter have rebounded, thanks to successes such as “Sinners”, “Minecraft” and “Thunderbolts” last weekend. In addition, comparisons with the first quarter of 2024 were always difficult, given that popular franchises as “dune” and “kung fu panda” were published during this period. The drop in pedestrian traffic could be observed in the reductions in AMC admissions income, which dropped from 11% to 473.5 million dollars, and concession sales, which dropped from almost 12% to 283.4 million dollars.
Aron said that with the exception of the Pandemic era, the results of the box office from January to March were the lowest that they have been since 1996.
“If this level of activity was to continue, of course, it would be very problematic for cinemas,” he said. “But on the contrary, since April 1, the demand for cinema is booming. The national box office of industry April 2025 has been double that of April 2024, and so far, the box office has once again worked at double the rate a year ago. So, we think that any negative affirmation drawn from the first quarter on the cinema industry is probably completely wrong.”
AMC said it had cash and cash equivalents of $ 378.7 million.
During a conference call with analysts, Aron spoke of President Trump’s proposal for a 100% price on films produced in “foreign lands”, a plan which, according to the initiates of the industry, would make the cost of the realization of films increase exponentially. We fear that the result is fewer films for theaters like AMC to detect, but Aron was diplomatic.
“We understand that there are no final and specific plans as to what can be sweat and that there will be many discussion opportunities between government and industry on this subject,” he said. “It goes without saying that we will pay particular attention to developments in this area.”
