For years, the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign had the “Illini fighter” mascot for reference to the Confederation of Illinois of Aboriginal peoples. Since the mid-2000s, the name has been kept as a reference to the State and not to the people themselves.
The Illinois also used the “Illiniwek chef” mascot from 1926 to “withdraw” the mascot in February 2007. The use of the logos chief and during sporting events had been considered controversial since the 1970s, because people thought that it perpetuated the racist stereotypes of the native peoples.
Among some fans of Illinois, the chef remains a lasting symbol of the school and his sports teams and many petitions have tried to bring him back.
Last month, the student body of Illinois voted massively in favor of the adoption of the surrounded Martin -Pêcheur – a bird with blue and orange colors which is from the state – like a new mascot.
