A paint that has sold for less than $ 50 during a garage sale could be an original van worth $ 15 million, according to experts.
The canvas was found by an antiquity manifold without distrust during a minnesota garage sale in 2016 and now historians, scientists and conservatives have joined forces to prove that it is a painting to the oil of the famous Dutch artist, the Wall Street Journal Reports.
The painting looks like Van Gogh’s work and represents a fisherman smoking a pipe while he takes care of his net on an empty beach.
Experts called the “Elimar” table because the name is engraved in the lower right corner of the canvas.
“An exhaustive and multi -year investigation into painting by experts in several fields has given the necessary evidence to identify Elimar as a work of autographs by the artist”, the New York International Art Research Company, which has acquired The painting of ancient collector, declared in its 450 -page report.
The group’s conclusions will be shared with Van Gogh specialists and artistic dealers from around the world later this month, according to the Newspaper.
They argue that the portrait was painted while Van Gogh was in the Saint-Paul asylum in the Saint-Remy of Provence in France between May 1889 and May 1890.
“Elimar is clearly based on a painting by the Danish artist Michael Ancher,” said the report. “Van Gogh did not copy but” translates “the work of anchor.”
The experts said that the portrait also represents a moment in the life of the artist where he “returned to themes and images of his youth”.
“The fishermen’s portraits and the themes of life at sea were some of his first subjects,” noted the report. The fisherman was “a character and a subject who was very close to him for the lonely and dangerous life that the fishermen led – during his lifetime”.
The evidence was meticulously gathered and thousands of dollars were expected to carry out the work. The brush blows were examined and compared to other works, while the pigments and the fibers of the painting have also been studied by an expert in Beaux-Arts.
Maxwell Anderson, former curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, told the Newspaper that he was “struck by what he saw” when the painting was revealed to him for the first time.

However, the painting cannot be officially validated as Original Van Gogh without the last word of a Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, the artifier of art Richard Polsky said to the Newspaper.

The museum did not comment on Elimar but told the newspaper that it had a “rigorous procedure” in place to separate the counterfeits from legitimate documents.
The spokesman added that “99%” of the authentication requests that the museum has received in recent years “could not be assigned to Van Gogh in our opinion”.
