The prices on millions of Americans have entered into force as the exhausted minimis exemption – cue chaos

new York

–

Many Americans may not have felt the major effects of President Donald Trump’s radical rates – so far.

This is because a large shipping escape expired a minute after midnight on Friday. The minimis exemption, as it is called, has enabled the shipments of goods worth $ 800 to come to the United States in franchise on American rights, often more or less from time to time, inspections and documents that take time.

The flaw has helped reshape the way in which countless Americans have shopping, allowing Chinese Ultra-Low-Coints electronic commerce sites like Shein, Temu and Aliexpress to pour everything, from patio furniture wire, clothing to photography equipment and more in American houses.

Its imminent end sounded an alarm on social networks, with a basic rate of up to 145% according to the carrier which comes into force on Chinese imports, potentially more than to double the cost of all these cheap products, the Americans affirmed by agreements have been the subject of people.

And the end of the minimis exemption for Chinese goods will also distill abstract, complicated, disorderly and difficult to follow something much easier to understand: a receipt.

The main carriers such as UPS, Fedex, DHL and the United States postal service say they are prepared for changes. The government says it is also resolved; An American customs and border protection spokesperson has told CNN that “we are prepared and equipped to perform improved packages and effectively apply orders”.

But if regular American buyers are ready for changes is another matter.

Of tchotchkes and commercial policy

When President Donald Trump initially closed the minimis exemption for Hong Kong and China goods earlier this year, Chaos followed.

USPS has briefly ceased to deliver parcels from China. The delivery times of the packages that have been sent longer, with limited information on monitoring packages in the United States.

At the heart of the problem: the volume of packages. According to a Congress Research Report.

The CBP told CNN that it currently dealt with “nearly 4 million lifelong lodges of minimis per day”. Research indicates that a majority of these expeditions come from China and Hong Kong. In total, during the last financial year, CBP said that 1.36 billion packages came to the United States under minimis exemption.

It is a lot of dog bandanas, pearl kits, frosting spatulas and tchotchkes. The regular buyers of TEMU and Shein told CNN this week that they had turned more and more to the site because they felt that the products made in the USA have put themselves out of reach.

“I cannot afford to buy at TEMU now, and I could not afford to buy in this country,” said Rena Scott, a 64 -year -old retirement nurse from Virginia, said in CNN Business.

Low -income households will suffer from the end of cheap Chinese electronic commerce sites. About 48% of the minimis packages sent to the poorest postal codes in the United States, while 22% was delivered to the richest, according to February research from the UCLA and Yale economists.

Changes could occur in steps. Already, for example, Shein and Temu have increased prices before the end of the exemption from Minmis, hiking prices on several goods followed by CNN.

“Due to recent changes in global trade rules and prices, our operating expenses have increased. To continue to offer the products you like without compromising quality, we will make price adjustments,” said Shein in a recently published opinion. “We do our best to maintain low prices and minimize the impact on you.”

A spokesperson for TEMU said that the company changed its business model to encourage more local achievement, increasing the number of American sellers on the platform.

“TEMU prices for American consumers remain unchanged as the platform passes to a local realization model,” the company said in a press release. “All sales in the United States are now managed by local sellers, with orders placed inside the country.”

It is not clear if more prices increase are on the way to these retailers and others.

Sender will also see higher costs. DHL told CNN that the company had “increased our endowment levels in order to support the additional volume of informal entry clearances that we plan”.

The goods of China and Hong Kong shipped via UPS, DHL and Fedex are subject to a basic rate of 145%, plus any specific rate for additional product. The goods shipped by USPS will be subject to a basic rate of 120% or at stable costs of $ 100 per postal item. On June 1, flat -rate costs will increase to $ 200.

A nucleus of the Maga’s database of Trump remains with the president, claiming that in publications on social networks and the reports that they will get out of the bumps in the economy with their faith in the president. But more and more, more Americans feel the opposite.

A majority of 59% of the public now says that Trump policies have aggravated American economic conditions, according to a CNN survey led by the SSR last month.

The investigation was conducted from April 17 to 24, after the White House announced for the first time new extensive prices on dozens of countries, then called a break from many of them. Despite this, 6 out of 10 respondents said that Trump policies had increased the cost of living in their community.

Friday, with the end of the minimis exemption, many Americans could see these costs even higher.

“It’s a very, it’s a big problem,” said Trump at a firm meeting on Thursday, calling the exception of minimis “a big scam”.

He added: “And we finished, we ended it.”

Ariel Edwards-Levy of CNN contributed the reports.
