Us Steel published preliminary results on the potential cause of Monday’s deadly explosion at US Steel Clairton Coke Works.
US Steel spokesperson Amanda Malkowski said in a statement on Friday that “the preliminary indications led us to believe” that the explosion occurred when a gas valve was the victim of the preparation of the planned interview.
The press release indicates that the pressure being built inside the valve, it failed and that the gas of the coke oven filled the area. The explosion then occurred when a source of ignition was found.
“We want to strengthen that this investigation is at its beginnings, and we will provide more information when we can,” the Malkowski statement said.
Around 11 a.m. on Monday, an explosion at US Steel Clairton Coke Works killed two and injured at least 10 people. The initial explosion occurred inside the reversal room for batteries 13 and 14, and several secondary explosions were reported.
The survey on the cause has already started, the leaders of Pennsylvania calling for transparency and responses. In Friday’s statement, Malkowski said that US Steel’s employees, agencies and experts have examined video sequences and interviewed employees. The press release indicates that US Steel will provide more information when it can.
At a press conference on Tuesday, Governor Josh Shapiro said US Steel remained attached to a complete and transparent investigation while ensuring that Clairton and his surrounding communities will be protected.
Dave Burritt, the CEO of US Steel, said that the company was working with local, state and federal investigators to determine what had happened. Among the agencies that study is the Committee of American Investigators on Chemical Security and Dangers.
Timothy Quinn was one of the two victims killed in the explosion on Monday. KDKA does not identify the second victim because the governor said their family would like to stay private at the moment.
The speed at which the preliminary results of US Steel came surprised the mayor of Clairton, Rich Lattanzi.
“I thought something like it would take two to four to five months to take place,” he said on Friday.
“I think what they found is a smoking pistol,” added Lattanzi.
The mayor said that the explanation “addresses and makes sense”. But Jojo Burgess, who works in the factory and is the mayor of Washington, still has questions.
“Did anyone know before it happens, so that he could try to stop the process?” He said.
Bernie Hall, director of United Steelworkers District 10, said on Friday that he was still at the start of the investigation and that the union had to learn more before speculating further.
