On Sunday, four people were treated for serious injuries after a parachuting plane with two engines carrying 20 people crashed into the County of Coffee, tenn., According to the authorities.
Lyle Russell, spokesperson for the city of Tullahoma, tenn., Where the accident occurred and about 75 miles south of Nashville, four people had been taken to hospitals with serious injuries. Their conditions were not immediately known.
Others who have undergone minor injuries have been treated on the scene, although it is not clear how much.
The plane was carrying heaven divers at the time of the accident, Russell said. The name of the company was not immediately available.
Some of those on board were transported by plane in hospitals, The Tennessee road patrol said on social networks.
The patrol said the first reports suggested that 16 to 20 people were on the plane, but the FAA confirmed that 20 were on board.
The FAA said the plane was one from Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. He crashed shortly after the departure of Tullahoma regional airport around 12:45 p.m. local time.
Terry Janiak, 66, who lives in front of the airport, said that the accident had occurred near the Beechcraft Heritage Museum, just short of the airport track.
“The cockpit area looked pretty rough on the plane,” said Janiak.
Sheila Stone, 57, who lived in front of the airport for 20 years, said that she was sitting on her back porch with her dogs when the plane passed surprisingly over her head.
Ms. Stone initially thought that the plane could strike one of the larger trees in her backyard, but in one way or another, she said, the pilot was able to avoid it.
“How he cleared this tree is a miracle,” said Stone.
Stone said the plane seemed to try to reach the main airport track. She said that she believed that one of the wings had struck a tree near the museum, spinning the plane before he went down to a neighboring field.
“I have never been so afraid,” she said. “I have planes flying over daily, but never so low and near my house thinking that it is about to crash into my courtyard.”
