The Philadelphia Inquirer calls on Donald Trump to quit after debate

The Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board called on former President Trump to withdraw from the race following his debate with President Biden, citing an “explosive litany of lies.”

“The debate about the debate is misplaced. The only person who should withdraw from the race is Trump,” the editorial board wrote Saturday.

Biden’s debate performance sparked panic among members of the media, in addition to some members of the Democratic Party, as several media outlets suggested he was withdrawing from the race.

The Inquirer acknowledged that Biden’s debate performance was a “disaster,” but argued that Trump was the one who should resign.

“The debate was a reminder of what the next four years of Trump would look like. No more lies, grievances, narcissism and hatred. Supporters say they like Trump because he says what he thinks. But it spews mostly raw sewage,” the Inquirer wrote.

The editorial board felt that Trump did not deserve a place on the debate stage and said: “Why give him a platform? »

“Yes, Biden had a horrible night. He’s 81 and not as sharp as he used to be. But Biden, on his worst days, is light years better than Trump on his best days,” they continued.

They argued that Biden has surrounded himself with experienced aides who value public service and that the president “believes in the best of America.”

“The Democratic machine is in complete panic because President Trump delivered the greatest debate performance in history while Joe Biden completely embarrassed himself in front of the country and the rest of the world,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told Fox News Digital in a statement.

Other media outlets such as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) and The New York Times have called on Biden to step down.

“He failed to describe the most fundamental aspects of his program,” the AJC editorial board wrote. “He failed to take credit for the significant achievements of his 3 1/2 years in office. And he failed to counter the prevarications of an opponent who, according to CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale, lied 30 times during the debate, about once every 90 seconds of his allotted time .”

The New York Times said Biden’s candidacy was a “reckless gamble.”

“The president appeared Thursday night as a shadow of a great public servant. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. He struggled to respond to Mr. Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Mr. Trump accountable for his lies, his failures, and his frightening plans. More than once, he struggled to finish a sentence,” the editorial board wrote.

The New York Times editors argued that Biden had been an admirable president, but said that “the greatest public service Mr. Biden can now perform is to announce that he will not continue to run for reelection.”
