Washington (AP) – The Pentagon ordered all military leaders and commands to shoot and review all their library books which deal with diversity, anti -racism or gender problems before May 21, according to a memo delivered to force on Friday.
This is the widest and most detailed directive to date on the campaign of the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, to rid the military of the programs, policies and teaching materials of diversity and actions. And he follows similar efforts to remove hundreds of books from the libraries of military academies.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the memo, which was signed on Friday by Timothy Dill, who exercises the functions of the Defense Subsecretaire for the staff.
The educational material of libraries “promoting division concepts and gender ideology is incompatible with the main mission of the department”, indicates the memo, adding that the leaders of the department must “quickly identify” books which are not compatible with this mission and sequester them before May 21.
Until then, indicates the memo, additional advice will be provided on how to reduce this initial list and determine what should be deleted and “determine an ultimate appropriate provision” for these materials. He does not say what will happen to books or if they will be stored or destroyed.
According to the memo, a temporary university library committee set up by the ministry will provide information on the examination and decisions concerning books. This panel has provided a list of search terms to be used in the initial identification of books to be extracted and examined.
Research terms include: positive action, anti-racism, critical theory of race, discrimination, diversity, gender dysphoria, identity and gender transition, transgender, transsexual and white privileges.
