The complex history of Natalia Grace Mans And the legal saga involving its former adoptive parents has been adapted several times for the small screen.
ID’s documentary centers are first “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace”, which was created in 2023 and broadcast its third and last season in January. Two months later, a new scripted mini-series, “Good American Family”, was presented on Hulu.
The drama torn apart from torn lines features Imogen Faith Reid like Natalia, an Ukrainian orphan with a form of nanism called spondylopipiphysian dysplasia. She is adopted by Kristine and Michael Barnett, a married couple played by Ellen pompeo And Mark Duplass, respectively. Through eight episodes, their relationship and their family dynamic take place while they are starting to suspect Natalia lies about her age – culminating in a legal confrontation in the final of the season.
In real life, the barnetts finally abandoned Natalia after saying that she was in fact an adult who claimed to be a child.

The now divorced couple, who said they thought that Natalia was 6 years old when they adopted it for the first time in 2010, accused Natalia of having made violent threats against family members – in particular by trying to poison Kristine – and said that she had pubic hair and menstrual cycles. Natalia has always denied all the affirmations of the barnetts concerning her violent behavior and simulated her age.
After sending their daughter adopted to a psychiatric hospital, Michael and Kristine became convinced that Natalia was secretly adult and managed to ask the age of Natalia from eight to 22 graduate education of the eldest son.
In 2019, they faced charges of negligence in connection with the case of Natalia. Michael was acquitted accusations in October 2022 and the accusations against Kristine were rejected in March 2023.
“The curious case of Natalia Grace” was released for the first time on the discovery of investigation in May 2023 and focused on the point of view of the Barnett family. In the second part of the documentary series, entitled “Natalia Speaks”, broadcast in January 2024, Natalia told her side of the story. The third episode, entitled “The Final Chapter”, was presented in first in January 2025 and focuses on his departure from the Le Mans family.
In “Natalia Speaks”, Natalia alleged that her adoptive mother, Kristine Barnett, had mistreated her when she was a child and had trained her to say that she was older than she was. Michael said in a conversation with Natalia in the documentary that her ex-wife had also manipulated him and said that Kristine, who had not participated in the docuseries, was cruel to Natalia.
When he was contacted to comment on, Kristine Barnett said in an email at Business Insider that the allegations that she “abandoned” or “abused” Natalia was false, supporting that Natalia was determined to be an adult by other parts and Michael. She said she refused to participate in the identification documentary.

The barnetts separated well before making their complaints against Natalia public in 2019.
The Lafayette Journal & Courier reported that Michael Barnett had left Canada at the end of 2013 and returned to Indianapolis. According to court documents accessible by USA Today, Kristine said that Michael returned to Indiana after an “incident impacting children” not specified in the fall of 2013 before requesting her divorce in February 2014. Their divorce was finalized four years later.

While Natalia was legally adult due to the rehabilitation of barnetts in court, she was always classified as a person in charge of barnetts following her handicap.
In 2019, Michael and Kristine were charged with negligence of a dependent person, Fox 59 reported legal documents deposited in the county of Tippecanoe in Indiana. According to the Lafayette Journal & Courier in 2022, the couple was specifically accused of negligence of a dependence, of a dependent person, causing bodily injuries, the negligence of a dependence which caused serious bodily lesions and the plot to be overlooked.
Tembling before the court against Michael during her trial, Natalia explained how her rare type of navism can cause skeletal anomalies and vision and hearing problems. According to Natalia, she could not swim or use a washing machine due to its mobility problems and mainly existed on instant noodles, pizzas and peanut butter sandwiches while living alone in Indiana.

Kristine turned shortly after Michael in September 2019, according to the newspaper & Courier. At the time, her prison files showed that she was living in Bradenton, Florida, although the accusations have listed an address in Indianapolis.
In March 2023, a county judge of Tippecanoe signed the order to reject the accusations against Kristine, according to the newspaper & Courier, citing “insufficient evidence” at the trial to prove the accusations in this case outside any reasonable doubt. “”
In 2013, Kristine published the book “The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing, Genius and Autism” on the education of her son Jacob. In an audio space of January 10 on X, which Kristine sent to BI by e-mail, she declared that the allegations against her were interfered with her career author and parental consultant.
