Touchbacks move to a line of 35 yards
The return rates improved after the NFL instituted the new dynamic kick -off last season, but there were still touches on 64.3% of kicks.
Now, the league moves the touchback to the 35 yards line, up the 30 yards line in 2024, in the hope of adding more action to the kicks. The injury rates have improved with the dynamic kick -off, and the NFL aims to make it become more an exciting game.
Return teams can also use different 6-3-2 training after being authorized to make a 7-2-2 last season, which should also encourage more yields.
The proposal to allow the teams to try a kick at any time (the teams can only try them in the fourth quarter by dragging currently) was not voted. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the talks surrounding the kick on the side will resume during the May meetings.
