This also filed test is based on a conversation with Jared Fisher, the CEO and founder of Escape Adventures, a tourist adventure agency and several bicycle stores in Nevada and Utah. Fisher also presented himself as a republican for the governor of Nevada in 2018. This story was published for length and clarity.
I have been a republican business owner who has run an adventure travel company for over 30 years. We explore automobile visits of several days and visits to road bikes with hikes, mainly in the southwest, and a mountain bike road in the hut in UTA. We also have retail bike stores in Las Vegas and Utah.
Recently, I made the decision to start adding an element of the price line price directly to price labels on certain products in our stores, in particular electric bikes. All our electric bikes from our main supplier will cost 10% more.
We have exactly the same electric bikes hanging on the same hook in our retail stores and a certain cost $ 4,500 and the one that is the next one costs $ 4,950. There is no difference except when we bought them, so we have a line item because it was bought when this price increase was implemented due to the price. It really puts us in an uncomfortable situation with our customers. We have to explain to them.
Whether we like it or not, we pay these taxes, this is how I consider the prices, as a brick and mortar store. We have to pay it to integrate this product into our store. If I don’t have a bike in a bicycle store, I go bankrupt.
So now, the fact will, are we going to pass this tax to our customers or not? The bicycle industry takes place on fairly tight margins. If you cut 10%, you could just as easily prepare to have your outing strategy for your business, because you will not be able to work. There is no way, that’s how it happens.
I ran to the governor of Nevada in 2018 as a republican. I did not vote for Donald Trump. This was the reason why I introduced myself to his functions. I looked at how he was as a business person and America is not a business. I have the impression that he does not understand how much his decisions have an impact. He has almost stalls.
I believe that people must be responsible for their actions. You can implement a policy which, in your opinion, is great and that we will support you, but we will also say to all those who do it. I have no problem to be labeled where this tax on my products comes from. People need to know it, so I have a chance to fight on my side.
This pricing policy has created chaos at all levels. Uncertainty is absolutely crazy. I ordered new sleeping bags in China for our summer visits, and I was informed that the supply chain has been disrupted and now I don’t know when I have this product or what I will do. We have to redo articles that take time for a season when we should focus on the experience of our customers.
As a business owner, I don’t have time for this tag. I have already made my planning in my slow season. It is really disruptive in my operations for me to have to find items for something I have already done.
We also see the effects on our tourist business. We have a lot of Canadian customers, and when all of this tariff speech started, they started to cancel tours. These are cancellations from $ 2,000 to $ 4,000. A group said to us: “We love you guys, but we cannot put our money in America because of what they do and what they say about our country.”
The prices affect everything at a certain level: some very large and others will not even notice it. It’s like many small cuts and finally bleed. Quite enough and people will close their doors. The only word I could say for all this problem we are faced with is not necessary. This does not need to happen, but it is.
