President Trump’s radical prices are expected to increase the cost of cars, electronics, metals, boost, pharmaceutical products and other products that consumers and American companies buy abroad.
But Mr. Trump and his advisers bet that he can sell an audience tiring of inflation on a provocative idea: cheap things are not the American dream.
“I don’t care if they increased prices, because people will start buying American manufacturing cars,” Trump said when meeting the NBC press on Sunday in response to fears of foreign cars.
The idea that there is more for life than low -cost imports is recognition that prices could impose additional costs on the Americans. It is also a land that the burden will be worth it. Mr. Trump’s ability to convince consumers that it is acceptable to pay more to support national manufacturing and adhere to his “America First” program could determine whether the president’s second mandate is a success or a calamity.
But it is not an easy sale. The price assault disrupted the markets and attenuated consumer confidence. The car rates that come into force Thursday will add a 25% tax on car imports and car parts, which has probably changed prices in the sector. Trump has already imposed 20% prices on Chinese products and others are expected later this week, when the president announces his “reciprocal” prices on the main business partners, including those of Asia and Europe.
By confronting anxiety in the face of the uncertainty of trade, Trump and his main economic aid has used Americans to think about the situation as a whole. They marry the opinion that Mr. Trump’s trade wars are necessary to correct decades of economic injustice and that paying a little more should be a question of national pride.
