‘The only logical choice’ – Conor McGregor announces plans to run for Irish president, raising questions over UFC return
UFC icon Conor McGregor has cast further doubt on his return to the Octagon by hinting at his plans to become the next president of Ireland.
McGregor is passionate about his home nation but has also shared controversial views on hot-button political issues in Ireland, including during the Dublin riots last year after three children were stabbed.
The 36-year-old posted on X to his 10.6 million followers that Ireland was “at war” the day before the tragic attack, before warning of “grave danger in Ireland”, prompting criticism online.
Incumbent President Michael D. Higgins is expected to call an election next October, giving McGregor plenty of time to plan a political career change.
Based on McGregor’s latest post, it looks like a future in politics could become a reality.

“As President I have the power to summon the Dáil (the Irish government) as well as to dissolve it,” McGregor wrote on X.
“As I have said before, I will have all the answers that the Irish people want from these thieves of workers, these disruptors of the family unit, these destroyers of small businesses, and so on!
“These charlatans, in their positions of power, would be called to account by the Irish people and I will ensure that this is done before the end of the day.
“Or I will have no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely. Stop the train until.
“The Irish people deserve the answers they seek. Straightforwardly. That would be my power as president. I know that very well.
“Ireland needs an active president, fully employed by the Irish people. That’s me. I’m the only logical choice. 2025 is coming…”
McGregor has no political qualifications or previous experience in the sector.
Controversial figure Andrew Tate offered his support to McGregor in the comments section, posting: “I have the Irish passport. I will vote for you. We need to do something before it’s too late.”
McGregor’s lengthy message came a day after he criticised the construction of a bike shed which reportedly cost £282,000.
The Irishman said he had “seen nicer bus stops” and wondered “which Wally in office” had approved the bike shed.
He added: “With me as president, this kind of behavior that we have seen countless times, some more serious than others, would be demolished immediately! A bunch of greedy and corrupt, that’s all!”
While McGregor has yet to make a splash in politics, he has earned tens of millions from other ventures outside the Octagon.
He sold his stake in whisky brand Proper Twelve for around £113 million in April 2021 and made his acting debut alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in Amazon’s remake of ‘Road House’.
As for his UFC career, McGregor has not fought since breaking his lower tibia against Dustin Poirier in July 2021.
The former featherweight and lightweight champion was scheduled to make his return at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler, but was forced to withdraw due to a broken toe.
MMA icon Chael Sonnen recently hinted that the fight between the two men would take place in 2025, with fans desperate to see the Notorious back in action.
