Edmonton – he had to, could have haves, almost or two and some ifs.
Edmonton’s Oilers were so close to winning their second consecutive home game to start the Stanley Cup final. This would have controlled them against Florida’s panthers while the series moves on the other side of the continent.
Instead, the Panthers winger Brad Marchand scored the decisive goal on an escape at 8:05 am of double extension of match 2 to give the Oilers a defeat of 5-4 Friday evening and even the match.
The goal came after the defender of the Oilers, Mattias Ekholm, missed the net on a unique time from the top of the circle to facilitate clear luck. He also came after Leon Draisaitl knows vigorously obstructed the merchant’s stick, who, despite his best efforts, could have contributed inadvertently to the washer of the puck through the legs of goalkeeper Stuart Skinner.
“It’s difficult to swallow, but it is not supposed to be easy,” said Corey Perry, the veteran winger of Oilers, Corey Perry. “They played hard tonight. They had their chances, and they capitalized on that one. This is the difference.”
The shots favored Edmonton 46-42 in a match which lasted nearly four and a half periods. It was played uniformly, with something of natural statistics according to the chances of danger erected at five against five to 16-15 in favor of the Oilers.
Kasperi Kapanen had the best chance of the oilers in more time. The oilers would have been in a much more jovial mood if its point of a viktor Arvidsss collar had beaten Sergei Bobrovsky in the second extension, 55 seconds before the winner of the merchant.
“The missing chances, you can think about it, dwell on it. But what is it going to do?” Said Perry. “It won’t do anything for you now.”
Perry’s goal with 17.8 seconds to play in the third period put the ilers in territory upon next. He has ahead of the Eetu Luostarinen of the Panthers to reach a rebound and beat Bobrovsky to get the last goal to equalize in the history of the Stanley Cup final.
He also gave the Oilers a chance to their eighth third period return in the Summary seriesWhich could have equaled a single year record in the NHL. An eighth return victory would have equaled the brands in the eliminatory series of the franchise which took place in 1987 and 1991.
Instead, the Oilers lost their first extension competition this spring after winning the first four – out of three goals from Draisaitl and another from Kapanen.
It was also the first time that they lost an additional match in the Cup final. They had previously won their four attempts, with Jari Kurri (1987), Petr Klima (1990), Fernando Pisani (2006) and Draisaitl (Match 1 this year) marking pivot goals.
“There will be a certain disappointment,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch. “But we had the mentality, whatever happens – bad game, near, overtime, tearing, easy, easy, we put it behind us and we are preparing for the next one.
“You learn in the playoffs, things are not always going in your direction. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes this is not the case. ”
Friday evening gave a contrast to match 1, when the oilers overcome a deficit of two goals, equaled the scoring in the third and obtained a Draisaitl goal on a power game at the last minute of the first period of extension.
“Each match could have been in half directions,” said Knoblauch. “When you win first, you are disappointed not to follow up and win the second. But we go with a split and that suits us.”
They agree with that, but they are not delighted.
Aside from the missed chances, there were other factors that the ilers will want to approach.
The power game was 1 for 6 and allowed a goal of the panthers when Marchand, the hero in overtime, scored on another breakaway, which gave the Panthers an advance of 4-3 in the second period.
They will also have to improve when it comes to managing the annoying panthes forward around their net.
In match 1, Sam Bennett fell into Skinner after a few contacts by the Brett Kulak defender, and a shot hit him and entered. The oilers challenged for the interference of the goalkeeper and failed, and the panthers marked on the subsequent power game.
In match 2, Bennett was again in Skinner’s kitchen, spilling him halfway from the first period after a boost from Ekholm. This time, Bennett was penalized because Skinner remained lowered and needed a certain attention to the sports therapist of the Head TD Forss.
Then, in the second period, the longtime nemesis Matthew Tkachuk was guided in Skinner as a punctual shot from former oil tanker Dmitry Kulikov heading towards the net. The washer beat Skinner and the Oilers chose not to challenge.
“We know that they have players who want to drive the net,” said Oilers defender John Klingberg. “We come to try to block earlier. But we also try to drive the net.
“These are a team of high fire volume and, if you are that, they also bring people on the net.”
There are things to clean. Things that could have been better. Factors that could have led to a better result.
“It’s very close to it. It is not a lot of room and ice,” said Klingberg. “But we fought back, scoring this goal had a certain momentum, we had a good chance in overtime as well as to them. It is a rebound here and there.”
The Oilers could easily improve at 14-2 in their last 16 games and have taken a workforce on this series. Instead, they will have to do comfort in a split.
“At this time of year, you have to move on,” said Draisaitl. “There is no time (spent) to think about it for too long. It is right now, but we have to continue.”
