Federal officials arrived and were denied the entry to two L..A. The unified elementary schools this week confirmed on Wednesday district officials, the first reported example of an attempt by the American authorities to enter a public school in Los Angeles, in the concerns of the application of immigration.
On Monday, two people arrived at the main office of Lillian Street primary school and identified as “representatives of a federal agency”, according to a message from school officials sent to parents and others. Individuals also presented themselves at Russell primary school. The two schools are located in the South Los Angeles district, Florence-Graham.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for Lausd confirmed that individuals came from the Internal Security Investigations Unit within the Ministry of Internal Security, and not immigration agents and the application of customs. District officials did not explain why individuals were there or published additional details on the visit.
“After following the district protocols, school administrators denied entry to individuals and they left,” school officials said in the press release to the two school communities. “We want to reaffirm the district’s unwavering commitment to the well-being and education of all students.”
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Security could not be reached immediately to comment.
Wednesday evening, the Surint schools. Alberto Carvalho published a brief declaration on incidents.
“Our schools are places of inspiration, protection, empathy and knowledge,” said Carvalho. “Fear and threat will be encountered by courage and determination.”
“These are the only two schools that have pointed out an activity. It seems that our protocols work,” said a spokesperson for Lausd in a Times email, adding that district policy is calling for the school campuses prohibited to the immigration authorities.
Lausd spokesperson said other schools had sent “precautionary messages” to their school communities, which referred to “immigration application activity reports”.
The director of the Rockdale primary school, Stefani Williams, sent a message to his community of Eagle Rock School, saying: “Lausd informed us that they were aware of the activity reports of immigration application”.
Immigration agents do not need to benefit from access to a K-12 campus without a mandate. The state has prepared advice to help school districts comply with the law of the state limiting the participation of the state and local to the application of immigration.
The district forced employees to receive training on assistance or documentation that they cannot or should not provide the federal immigration authorities.
Carvalho, preparing the application of immigration under the Trump administration, said in January that he hoped that agents could be fully kept outside campus.
“What would be the need to apply any type of legal proceedings on the campus that could not be done outside the school? We do not believe that it is necessary or appropriate,” he said in January. “We do not expect a federal entity … should have access to schools to apply the immigration policy, the final point.”
The Board of Education has adopted a series of resolutions indicating that the unified will be a sanctuary for immigrants.
