The Nvidia conference should make a big splash in downtown San Jose

Nvidia has a special place in the heart of Dan Phan.

The native of San Jose remembers having saved for months when he was a teenager to obtain a GPU GeForce2 for a computer he built. And now-as part of the group that has the city center of Hot Spots Eos & Nyx, Paper Plane, Still Og and Miniboss-it is anxious to host the Big Tech conference in Nvidia, the GTC, and the 25,000 people that this will bring to the city center of San Jose in mid-March.

“Bringing thousands of visitors to San Jose is not just about filling out the convention halls. It’s about activating the city center, ”said Phan. “When participants in the conference leave the conference, they enter our city. They have coffee in our local cafes, they reserve tables in our restaurants and relax in our cocktail bars. »»

The mayor of San Jose, Matt Mahan, said that last year’s GTC – the first held in person since the pandemic – reported $ 15.5 million in economic impact, making it the largest post -payri conference in the city. The bars and the restaurant, he said, could make the rent of their whole month in a few days.

Mahan, City Councilmember Carl Salas, San Jose State University President Cynthia Teniente-Matson and Greg Estes, Nvidia’s Vice President for Corporate Marketing and Developer Programs, Joined Phan on Friday Morning to Talk About Nvidia’s “Downtown Takeover” at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, Which Along San Jose Mcenery Convention Center, the Tech Interactive and the Montgomery Theater Will Be the Conference’s Hubs of Activity.

The opening address of the co-founder of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, is scheduled for March 18 and will probably pack Sap Center, but it is also in difficulty, and Nvidia will have a surveillance party at SJSU for students of the Bay Area College. Like last year, the town hall and other buildings in the city center should be illuminated in green, the signing color of Nvidia.

The mayor’s office joined forces with the Santa Clara technology giant – which made its debut in a Denny’s in San Jose – to distribute 1,000 tickets for the conference exhibition hall on March 21 to students, downtown residents and neighborhood chiefs.

It looks like a good time – and it should be unless you are a local resident looking to have a drink or eat in your favorite bar or restaurant. The four places belonging to the Phan group have eight “takeovers” planned during the conference, and I heard others like Il Fornaio and the press room – which has not even opened – have also been reserved for gatherings related to the conference. And the night activations of the Plaza of Cesar Chavez will also be open to participants of the conference.

But if you want to look on the right side, maybe the overflowing crowd (and all the inhabitants) will eventually discover new places in the city center.

Phan definitively looks at the increase and says GTC could have a lasting impact on the city.

“Conferences like GTC present people in San Jose, a lot for the first time,” he said. “They see that this city is not only where innovation occurs, but this is where you can live, work and live good food, drinks and nightlife. For owners of small businesses like me, this exhibition is invaluable. »»

The sushi thief is rolled: The owner of Sushi Confidential, Randy Museter, rests a little more easily after a dinner and a series in series – which he estimates moved away with almost $ 1,000 in food – was captured this week after trying in their campbell location.

The alleged thief tried to sneak a rear outing on Monday evening, but was caught by an alert table bus, so he doubled and raised it to the front entrance. Mattererer, who looked at the flow of household flow cameras, started driving and called Campbell’s police when he spotted it. He was caught in a few minutes.

“It was, surprisingly, a perfect end to history,” said it. “I asked a few other restaurant owners to reach out that he had done to them the same thing, so it was not only confidential of sushi.”

The new pact shepherd: People acting in the community together, the interconformer organizing the non-profit community in San Jose, welcomed the Reverend Jon Pedigo as a new executive director during a reception held Thursday at the Emanu-El temple in San Jose.

Pedigo certainly seems to be the right person for the position, with decades of community work in his name with the Catholic and Amigos charitable organizations of Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment, as well as working with Pact in different titles since the late 1980s.

Currently, the parish vicar of the St. Lucy parish in Campbell, the Reverend Pedigo was a pastor in St. Julie Bilart and Notre-Dame de Guadalupe in San Jose. Some have described it as brands as a shooting and others, a plane -rod, and I am sure that he would be fine with one or the other description – except that he would not appreciate the people he works to allow to be called “root”.

“I learned that the power of this organization is in relation, and it is not only a disposable line. It is a reality that we are strong when we act together, “said Pedigo in an Instagram video. “When we act together, when we meet, when we recognize power in each other, we recognize our collective wisdom, our collective criticism and our collective action can make real changes.”

Beer run: There is still time to register for San Jose Shamrock Run, which will fill the city center of San Jose with runners and walkers dressed in green on March 15. The 5k and 10 km races for the Pré-St. The event of Patrick’s day, which collects funds for the Patrick McMahon Stock Exchange of the San Jose-Dublin Sister City program, will start at 8 am in front of San Pedro Square (the Leprechaun race for children has a departure later at 9:30 am). You can get more information on Sanjoseshamrockrun.com.

O’Flaherty’s pub in San Pedro Square is directed in the center and will host the arrival party with Irish dancers, the San Jose Police Emerald Society Pipe Band and a free Guinness beer for all runners. Oh, the things we will do for a free beer.
