NFL players want to participate in football flag at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill are among those who have expressed their interest.
“I have heard many players who want to participate and represent their country directly, be it the United States or the country from which they come,” the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said on Tuesday.
But the NFLPA and the 32 NFL teams have a say on the opportunity to put their players at risk of injury.
The owners discussed it during their annual meetings in Palm Beach, and Goodell plans to have a response to players soon.
“I think this is something that we will pursue discussions not only with the union, but also clubs,” said Goodell. “I think the two are things that will probably resolve over the next 60 days.”
The 2028 Olympic Games take place from July 14 to 30, which conflicts with the start of the training camp.
“I think the Olympic Games are an essential moment for us in the development of the flag on a global basis,” said Goodell. “Listen, the Olympic Games are the ultimate in international sport, and so that we can participate in what, so that the male and female flag teams participate from the whole world, this is an important moment for us.
“So there are a lot of things for qualifications and how it happens, which clearly inspires part of the work (for a professional football league).”
