NFL fans are one more step from the possibility of seeing Patrick Mahomes play Olympic football in three years.
The NFL announced Tuesday that team owners voted in favor of authorizing it the players to participate in Football Flag at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported that the motion had to pass.
Stephen Holder and Kevin Seifert d’Espn also reported Tuesday morning that “many of the end details are far away and are not yet negotiated between the NFL”.
Any change in NFL rules requires approval of at least 24 of the 32 teams before being able to be implemented.
Holder and Seifert have described injury protection as the “greatest obstacle” to finalize an agreement, and noted that the vote that passes on Tuesday does not mean that the rule is automatically implemented.
The approval of the vote will rather allow the NFL to continue working on an agreement between the League, the NFLPA and the International Olympic Committee, by holder and Seifert.
The League announced last Thursday that the owners would plan to allow participation in football of the flag before the Los Angeles Games.
The resolution envisaged by the owners indicates that authorizing it the NFL players to participate in Football Flag will contribute to “the increase in the interest of fans and the public in the football of the flags” as well as “the enlargement of the global scope of the NFL”.
The proposal indicates that a single NFL player on each list will be able to participate, in addition to the designated international actors who could represent their country of origin.
The resolution also proposes to offer relief of the salary ceiling to teams whose players are injured in competition, and requires that the Olympic flag football teams meet the standards approved by the League for the “medical staff and surfaces on the field”.
Mahomes said that after Flag football, had been officially added to the Los Angeles Olympic Games program in November 2023, he would certainly like to play for the team.
Other NFL players, including Aaron Jones, Aaron Jones, Aaron Jones, expressed interest in representing the American team.
Six nations will participate in Football Drapeau during the Olympic start of sport. Each team will have ten players, five of whom will be on the field at a time.
USA Football announced its 2024 list, which does not include NFL players on Monday before the American football world football championship (IFAF) in Finland in Finland in August. The men’s team is led by Darrell “Housh” Doucette, the quarter-Arrière who led the United States team to the world matches 2022.
