What do you want to know
- Rumors have been circulating for some time that the next DOOM from Microsoft subsidiary id Software is on the docket for an imminent reveal.
- Now, separate reports that we can corroborate suggest that the upcoming DOOM is a prequel of sorts, dubbed DOOM: The Dark Ages.
- We can also corroborate reports that DOOM: The Dark Ages is a cross-platform release for Xbox and PlayStation.
It’s been four years since DOOM Eternal graced our screens, and id Software shows no signs of slowing down.
Today, separate reports from reliable sources from Insider Gaming and Nate The Hate have given us some insight into where DOOM will be headed next. We are about to become medieval.
We can corroborate Insider Gaming and Nate’s reports on DOOM: The Dark Ages. Although I didn’t have the name, multiple sources have confirmed to me over the past few weeks that DOOM is heading to the Xbox Games Showcase 2024. The game’s working title was DOOM: Year Zero, initially leaked via the FTC on last summer, and it looks like DOOM: The Dark Ages will be a prequel of sorts.
DOOM game director Hugo Martin has noted in previous streams that he wanted to slow DOOM down a bit, to make you feel like a hulking monster truck rather than a deadly race car. This would fit the theme of DOOM heading into the past, before the Doom Slayer gained many of his modern powers and weapons – although the D’nur Silver Night Sentinels still have access to weapons and weapons. items of this nature, albeit with a “chivalrous twist. But perhaps the setting will be before Doom Slayer even encounters the Night Sentinels.
With modern DOOM games expanding their story exponentially to other planets and races, Hell’s march across the cosmos could potentially take place anywhere, in any time period. DOOM Slayer will be there to rip, of course, with reckless abandon.
DOOM: The Dark Ages is also coming to PlayStation
I can also confirm Nate’s report that DOOM: The Dark Ages is planned for PlayStation in addition to Xbox and Windows PC, potentially day and date. Microsoft acquired Zenimax a few years ago, and with it id Software and the DOOM IP. I noted in my Xbox Games Showcase 2024 predictions that you might get a glimpse of Microsoft’s evolving cross-platform strategy at the show, and that’s part of what I was referring to. Some may lament Microsoft’s opportunity to “remove” DOOM from PlayStation, but id Software was already set up to create cross-platform titles in parallel. DOOM has always existed on PlayStation, and as with franchises like Fallout and Minecraft, it makes no sense to arbitrarily remove it from one of gaming’s biggest fan bases. After all, the company sells games and subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass. And you can expect DOOM: The Dark Ages to join other DOOM games on Xbox LOSS Game Pass as well.
Naturally, though, you can expect the marketing for DOOM: The Dark Ages to have a very strong Xbox focus, alongside Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and various other upcoming games planned for the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 on June 9, 2024, some of which will also potentially be cross-platform on PlayStation.
