The new video of MrBeast made a meticulous examination of the Mexican government – and even of the president. Here’s what’s going on.

MrBeast’s latest video drew the attention of the Mexican government, and even President Claudia Sheinbaum weighed.

Earlier this week, the YouTube star – whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson – published a video exploring several old Mayan temples, including Chichen Itza.

“I cannot believe that the government lets us do this,” said the 27 -year -old in the video, after which he reiterates in a voiceover, “even archaeologists are not allowed to come back here.”

In the description of the video, which has 60 million views and counting, Donaldson wrote that the video had been filmed “in collaboration with Mexican Tourism Board”, and he thanked the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), a government agency that works to preserve the cultural heritage of Mexico.

CNN indicated that there was initially a controversy around Donaldson’s access to the sites. Inah on Monday said in a statement that the necessary permits had been processed and that INAH staff supervised the recordings at any time.

Inah added that the video seemed to involve in-depth post-production work and refer to events that have never occurred, including a helicopter descent on one of the temples and the manipulation of an old mask.

On Wednesday, Sheinbaum spoke publicly about the video. CNN indicated that she had asked the INAH to report the conditions under which the production permit had been granted. If the license was violated, she added, then the sanctions must be determined.

On Thursday, INAH said in a thread on X that he brought a legal action against a production company called Full Circle Media who worked with Donaldson on video. Donaldson himself does not face any legal action.

The thread alludes at a time towards the end of the video, when Donaldson benefits from a traditional Mayan party. After dinner, it brings out a box of peanut butter cups for dessert, joking that it is the “only snack approved by the Mayan on the planet”.

Inah on X said that even if it was open to collaboration to disseminate the cultural heritage of Mexico, it condemned those who harm the value of archaeological sites for commercial purposes.

He indicated that the permit granted to Full Circle Media has not authorized the publication of false information or the use of sites for advertising. Inah requires compensation for damage and public retraction.

Full Circle Media did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
