“It is, of course, serious. He therefore decided not to take the position. A new recruitment process will start now,” said Stuart, adding that assistant national security advisor Annika Brändsröm will temporarily play the role.
Earlier Friday, the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN) reported that Thyberg had resigned after the publication asked him questions about the photos described as “sensitive”.
“These are old photos of an account that I had before on the Grindr dating site. I should have informed (the government) about it, but I did not do it. So I said that I did not intend to take the post of national security advisor,” Thyberg told DN.
Thyberg was Sweden Ambassador to Afghanistan from 2017 to 2019, Ukraine Ambassador until 2023, and recently led the Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
Sweden has only had two national security advisers to date, who have both left the post in unusual circumstances. Thyberg predecessor Henrik Landerholm resigned in January after a prosecutor launched an investigation into his poorly classified document in a conference center in 2023.
