Milo Janáč, 49, told Politico that he had returned to his hometown of Gelnica (pop. 6 202) by train two weeks ago from a demonstration in Bratislava when an interview in a newspaper attracted his attention. In this document, Professor Eva Wolfová explained that “it is not a great thing that 50,000 people demonstrate in Bratislava and 15,000 in Košice. But when they obtain 300 people who protest in Gelnica, it is over (for the Fico government). »»
Gelnica, an impoverished mining city installed in the 13th century by ethnic Germans in Bavaria, is in the mountains of the Slovak ore in the east of the country. The average gross monthly salary there in August 2024 was € 1,241, the third lower among the 79 districts of Slovakia. The Fico Smergery won Gelnica with 30% of the votes in the last legislative elections.
“I took it as a challenge, and even on the train, I started to do without messages to ask him if they could help,” said Janáč, who, in addition to writing and of the bartender, also serves as spokesperson for the office of the mayor of Gelnica.
“Robert Fico has a lot of support for voters where I live. I know that he will not resign, regardless of the number of people who reveal themselves to Gelnica, but if these protests are starting to spread further among these small cities, we will be in a new reality, “said Janáč.
Fico, which before 1989 belonged to the Communist Party of the Epanoux de Crécoslovakia, returned to power in October 2023 for its fourth term as Prime Minister. With Hungarian chief Viktor Orbán, he formed a pro-Russian salient within the European Union, and before Christmas last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, rejected an unofficial ban on the EU of Meet senior Russian officials.
“Losing our future”
More recently, Fico said, without providing evidence, that the Legionaries of Georgia as well as Ukrainian military counteratthening the demonstrations in Slovakia to overthrow his government.
