The United States will not have Greenland, its new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said in response to Donald Trump’s latest statements that he wants to take control of the vast Arctic country.
“President Trump says that the United States is getting Greenland. Let me be clear: the United States does not get that. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future,” said Nielsen.
During an interview with NBC on Saturday, the American president said: “We are going to have Greenland. Yes, 100%”and argued that even if there is a” good possibility that we can do it without military force … I do not remove anything from the table “.
Trump said that he had “absolutely” had real conversations on the annexation of the Danish territory semi-autonomous.
Nielsen, a former 33 -year -old Minister of Industry and minerals, was sworn in on the role of the young Prime Minister of Greenland on Friday. During his first press conference as a leader, in his hometown of Nuuk, he called for political unity to fight against external pressures. His message was clear: “At a time when we, as a people, are under pressure, we have to stand together.”
He was sworn in in a few hours before a high-level delegation led by the American vice-president JD Vance arrives on the island. Vance said: “Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the inhabitants of Greenland. You have underinvested to the inhabitants of Greenland and you have sub-infringed on the safety architecture of this incredible and beautiful land mass.”
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said on Saturday: “We are open to criticism, but allow me to be completely honest, we do not like the tone in which he is delivered.
“This is not how you speak to your nearby allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States as close allies.”
