It has become a bit of a cliché to say “Broadcast’s back” because, of course, he was never really gone. Just ask fans of “NCIS”, “Law & Order: SVU” or “Gray’s Anatomy”, shows that has been on the air for decades – and launched when Netflix was only known to send DVDs to your home.
But there is also a truth in the rebirth of this year’s network television. It was a strong season for traditional linear outlets – two of the most watched new shows, period, were ABC “High potential“And” Matlock “by CBS.” And the third program most watched overall was the eye “Tracker“Beaten only by the phenomena of Netflix”Calmar game“And” adolescence “.
We know all of this because Nielsen’s multiplatform notes are finally there, and for the first time since the dawn of the revolution streaming, we can see comparisons of apple apples from the way the programs through the television landscape are. Thanks to these new measures, we get a complete snapshot of what people look in linear and streaming – or both. And for those who like to classify the most watched series on television, it changed the game.
These Nielsen multiplatform numbers, which include 35 days of linear and streaming visualization, show that “high potential” began with 8.2 million viewers on linear television (ABC), then almost doubled this with 7.9 million streaming viewers (Hulu) – which brought it to a total average of 16.1 million viewers. “Matlock” started with 10.5 million viewers on CBS, then added 5.5 million via Paramount +.
If you look at the younger demos, the imbalance is more striking, because it is clear that viewers under the age of 50 are more often watching broadcasting programs on their streaming partners.
Statistics also confirm that Netflix is a giant, just as we have known for a long time. The annual ranking of the variety of the most watched series of the television season has traditionally examined the linear and cable broadcasting networks. This year, we are proud to present a more complete list of all the most watched series in the 2024-25 TV framework.
Well, not quite. This list does not include sports, which means “Sunday night football” by NBC, “Monday Night Football” by ABC / ESPN and “Thursday Night Football” by Prime Video are not here. But you already knew that the NFL really reigns television, so let’s focus on the entertainment rate.
And also, since that looks at 35 days, the cup was in early April for this graph – and we know that a lot of television occurs at the end of April and early May, so it’s a big asterisk. Besides the “high potential” and “Matlock”, here are some additional winners (OK, and some losers too) of the television season that has just paid.
Winners
Netflix
Nielsen’s multiplatform numbers show that Netflix dominates visualization: five of the 10 best programs of the season (we exclude sports here) are on Netflix. Season 2 of “Squid Game” was the most watched series of the season by far, with an average of 27.1 million viewers, while in n ° 2, a limited surprise series “adolescence”, with 19 million. Netflix also had the most watched comedy of the year, with “No one wants that”. Speaking of that …
Comedy
It is probably sure to say that laughs are finally back on television. Besides “No one wants that”, the top 20 includes “running out” and “a man inside”, also from Netflix, as well as the first marriage of CBS and Georgie & Mandy “and” Ghosts “. Among these programs, all are in their first season, except for “ghosts” – which means that they will be there for a while. And “Ghosts” has just received a renewal of two seasons. In demos, “Abbott Elementary” also remains a huge success.
‘Ms. Rachel ‘
WHO? What? The personality of YouTube, known for his preschool -oriented videos inspiring song, dance and game, on average 11.5 million viewers for its programs, which can also be seen on Netflix. Sorry “Bluey”, you have a competition.
“ Survivor ”, “American idol”, “The Voice”, “Dancing with the stars”, “The Amazing Race”
The veterans of reality have always understood this. Season 48 and season 47 of “Survivor” were among the most watched reality series of the season, while “The Voice”, “American Idol”, “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Amazing Race” are also part of the Top 100. (Not bad for the shows that have been in the air for decades!) ” recent final, according to ABC. Meanwhile, do you go back to the more recent stars, notably “The Floor”, “Is Is Cake? Holiday “,” Beast Games “,” Love is Blind “and” Love on the Specrum Us “, which also reached the graph.
Losers
Basic cable
It is almost cruel to kick the cable while it is down, but the only basic cable show to do in the Top 100 was the “Yellowstone” of Paramount Network, and it was with a help from CBS.
“FBI: Most Wanted”, “FBI: International” and “Equalizer”
CBS erased the decks a little this year, canceling three dramas which still operated well enough to make the multiplatform list of the first 30 broadcast only. Also there: “Dr. Odyssey “from ABC, who is still waiting for his fate despite a solid audience number.
Linear vision among younger demos
The broadcast can be back, but do not confuse this with “linear”. In total viewers, of course, Linear is still playing a big role in the success of broadcasting networks – but look at the demos. It is a very different story: “high potential”, the broadcasting emission n ° 1 this season in 18-49, on average 5.2 million viewers in the demo – 4.2 million streaming, 1 million linear. In Premium Cable, the difference is even more austere: “The White Lotus” by HBO is show No. 5 of the year, with 6.5 million viewers. From this number, 325,000 came from linear television and 6.2 million came from streaming. (For “The Penguin”, for its average of 4.7 million in 18-49, only 165,000 were linear.)
