The day before the death of Pope Francis, he made a final trip in his Popemobile. Pope Leo XIV could be the next one to use it.
The Personalized G-Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle has been designed to transport Francis around the Vatican city’s programs as part of its commitment to environmental justice.
“With this Popemobile, we also send a clear call to electromobility and decarbonization,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, in a statement in December 2024, when he delivered the car to Pope Francis.
Mercedes-Benz has a long history of providing cars for the papacy, dating from a Pullman living room of the Nürburg 460 for Pope Pius XI in 1930.
