The median salary for Meta employees is $379,000 per year

  • The median Meta employee earned more than $379,000 in 2023, according to a recent filing.
  • This figure is significantly higher than many tech jobs, although it is comparable to competitors like Google and Amazon.
  • Meta has laid off staff and is spending billions on AI.

If you’re a tech at Meta, you’re probably doing pretty well.

That’s according to a recent SEC filing, in which the company said its median employee earned just over $379,000 in 2023.

Meta employs about 67,000 people, according to the filing, so there is bound to be considerable variation.

An Insider analysis previously found that the company’s top software engineers and researchers tend to earn more in base salary than product designers and user experience professionals.

Still, Meta’s median figure is significantly higher than the average tech position, which tends to be between $35,000 and $120,000 depending on the role, according to data listed by one recruiting company.

But in the world of Big Tech, Meta’s median salary isn’t as impressive as it seems. Industry giants like Google and Amazon also hold positions that regularly pay well over $300,000.

The same filing says CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s total compensation in 2023 was $24.4 million.

Most came from security and logistics costs since the Facebook co-founder earned a salary of just $1 last year. (Of course, most of Zuckerberg’s $157 billion net worth is tied up in his stock options.)

Even with such attractive remuneration, this does not mean that working at Meta becomes easier.

Earlier this year, Zuckerberg told employees that going forward, the company would make its so-called “Year of Efficiency” — the drive to maximize productivity by stepping up performance reviews and layoffs — the permanent situation.

The company has cut 22% of its workforce since 2022, with no end in sight. Meta reported strong profits on its latest quarterly call, but also doubled down on Zuckerberg’s plan to spend billions more on AI, spooking investors.
